What's around Me? Spatialized Audio Augmented Reality for Blind Users with a Smartphone

چکیده
Numerous projects have investigated assistive navigation technologies for the blind community, tackling challenges ranging from interface design to sensory substitution. However, none of these have successfully integrated what we consider to be the three factors necessary for a widely deployable system that delivers a rich experience of one’s environment: implementation on a commodity device, use of a preexisting worldwide point of interest (POI) database, and a means of rendering the environment that is superior to a naive playback of spoken text. Our “In Situ Audio Services” (ISAS) application responds to these needs, allowing users to explore an urban area without necessarily having a particular destination in mind. We describe the technical aspects of its implementation, user requirements, interface design, safety concerns, POI data source issues, and further requirements to make the system practical on a wider basis. Initial qualitative feedback from blind users

Overview of Performance and Accuracy of Smartphone Sensors in Augmented Reality Applications
Since incorrect excavations have resulted in extensive and irreparable financial and physical losses, therefore different drillings require having accurate information about the status of the infrastructures. Ubiquitous Geospatial Information System (UBGIS) as a new generation of Geospatial Information System (GIS) can be a good solution to avoid such problems. Augmented Reality (AR) is the ne...

In this dissertation research, we explore ways of using audio on AR applications, as it is especially suitable for mobile users when their eyes and hands are not necessarily available and they have limited attention capacity. While most previous mobile AR audio systems were mostly tested in sparse audio maps, we want to create a system that can be challenged by a city load of information. We de...
متن کاملAn Overview of Augmented Reality in Various Fields of Mechanical Engineering
Augmented reality, blurs the line between what's real and what's computer-generated by enhancing what we see, hear, feel and smell. Taking the technology to the next level, where engineers can display hidden items such as underground utilities using a small tablet or smartphone, for instance, is a lot trickier and a lot more difficult. In this paper, the introduction, application and future sco...

Researchers have long been interested in the synergy between portability and computing power but had been limited by unwieldy, uncommonly used devices. The latest generation of mobile phones, i.e. ‘smartphones’, are equipped with hardware powerful enough to develop novel, interesting applications with allow users to directly interact with the world around them. This paper describes a multimodal...
